Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP) with Dr. Ethan Bregman
Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP) is a therapeutic approach that combines the safe, medically supervised use of ketamine with psychotherapy to support deeper healing and lasting change. For some clients, KAP can help create more frequent breakthroughs, reduce symptoms, and open new pathways for growth.
Dr. Bregman provides the psychotherapy portion of the process, partnering with Journey Clinical or the medical provider of your choice for all medical aspects—such as determining eligibility, prescribing medication, creating a tailored treatment plan, and monitoring progress.
What Makes Dr. Bregman’s Approach Unique
Dr. Bregman integrates mindfulness and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) into every stage of preparation and integration. These methods help clients develop psychological flexibility, align actions with personal values, and cultivate awareness before, during, and after the ketamine experience.
His approach is grounded in:
Harm reduction and safety – discussing risks, benefits, and safety plans in advance.
Personalized preparation – clarifying intentions, expectations, and goals.
Supportive integration – turning insights into meaningful changes in habits, relationships, and daily life.
What is Ketamine?
Ketamine is a legal, well-researched medication with fast-acting antidepressant and mood-enhancing effects. It is commonly used to help with depression, anxiety, PTSD, and other mental health conditions. In KAP, ketamine is prescribed in low doses to enhance the therapy process, improve neuroplasticity, and create opportunities for new perspectives.
With Journey Clinical, ketamine is provided in sublingual lozenge form, designed for comfort and safety.
What to Expect in the KAP Process
1. Initial Medical Consultation
You’ll first meet with a Journey Clinical clinician via Zoom to review your medical and psychiatric history, learn about treatment, and confirm eligibility. If approved, they will create a personalized prescription and treatment plan.
2. Preparation Sessions
Before your first ketamine session, you and Dr. Bregman will meet for one or more preparation sessions. This is where you’ll discuss intentions, explore your emotional readiness, and plan for the experience.
3. Dosing Sessions
Sessions last 1–2 hours and can be in-person or via telehealth. You’ll self-administer the lozenge in a comfortable, supportive environment, often with calming music and an eye mask. Dr. Bregman will be present throughout to provide guidance and hold a safe, non-judgmental space.
4. Integration Sessions
In follow-up therapy sessions, you’ll process insights and experiences from the dosing session, connecting them to real-life changes. Integration is key for transforming momentary breakthroughs into lasting shifts in perspective, habits, and relationships.
5. Ongoing Medical Follow-up
Journey Clinical will continue to check in with you to monitor progress and manage medication refills as needed.
